Cavities and tooth decay

Tooth decay is caused by the destruction of tooth enamel. It occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) are frequently left on the teeth. Common sugary foods include milk, pop, raisins, cakes or candy.

Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay, which in turn can lead to more serious dental complications in the future.

Try to remember that it’s prolonged exposure to sugar that does the most damage to your teeth. Drinking a glass of pop in five minutes will have less of an impact than drinking the same glass of pop over the period of an hour.

When you indulge and a toothbrush and floss aren’t available, make sure to flush your mouth with water.
